Morgue File

A deep dive into the fashion of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

The Ask

Perform an in-depth analysis of the fashion trends in womenswear and menswear from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The first step in the process of this project was to gather all the information I could on the fashion of each decade, primarily utilizing the textbook, articles, and links provided by my professor as my primary sources. I researched everything from the biggest fashion trends to the most prominent events happening in the world during each decade. I learned just how impactful the zeitgeist of the time can be on not only people’s lifestyles but on their clothing choices as well. No fashion trend is a coincidence and is a product of the direction the world is going in politically, economically, socially, technologically, and sustainably.

Part One: Research, research, & more research

THE PROCESS

The next step was to narrow down my information and gather imagery for the different trends I wanted to spotlight. To make sure I properly brought attention to the most influential trends of each decade I had to strategically select specific imagery. I wanted to bring attention to some of the most influential trends of each decade style-wise that were also indicative of where the world was politically and socially at the time. The images were taken from a variety of sources, some of which were found on the reputable and well-known Met Museum website.

Part Two: Gathering Imagery

Part Three: Arranging the Presentation

Lastly, I had to arrange all of the elements to ensure the slide deck was easy to understand, visually appealing to the viewer, and of course informative. The color palette for the presentation was chosen for the emergence/increase of bright, vibrant colors in fashion during these decades, which I concluded from the findings in my research.

THE OUTCOME

This project was very enjoyable for me since it taught me more about how much current world events have an effect on fashion. I was also inspired to use this information when identifying current trends in fashion, as well as forecasting them for future seasons, carefully keeping an eye on the zeitgeist of the time.
